Pupils can select Chess as an additional sport. We have between 40 and 50 chess players who challenge each other for the top spots on the internal ladder in order to obtain a coveted spot in one of the three teams that participate in the Southern Suburbs Chess League. We are proud that the first and second teams are consistently among the top performers in the league. Pupils must attend at least one practice a week and be available to play matches on Friday afternoons should they be included in a team. We regularly participate in tournaments and players are actively encouraged to try out for the Western Province Teams. We are proud to have a few players each year who compete at a provincial, national and even international level. Our very knowledgeable coach, Tane Ressell, is an Old Westerfordian who plays chess provincially and for the UCT team.
