Sport at Westerford
Westerford High School offers various sports disciplines for both healthy recreation and enjoyment. We believe that sport has great educational value in that it not only promotes physical fitness, but also encourages teamwork and the development of self-control, co-operation, loyalty, unselfishness, determination and leadership.
On the principle that sport is good for the individual and good for the School, every pupil is encouraged to participate in both summer and winter sports. Pupils are also strongly urged to play for their School rather than an outside club.
The pupils of our School thoroughly enjoy taking part in inter-school matches. Competition is an important part of sport, and there is nothing wrong with this – as long as such competition produces enjoyment and not ill-feeling. Inter-school matches are not worthwhile if they cause hostility and strained feelings between players or between schools.
Prospective parents and pupils should also note that the Revised National Curriculum requires that each pupil in Grades 10 and 11 participate in sport for assessment purposes in terms of the FET Life Orientation programme. At Westerford, we use our sports programme for this assessment.
