ZITHULELE TRIP

On the 14th of July, ten Grade 12s and two Grade 11s leave with Mr Anderson and Mr Massyn for Zithulele Village in the Transkei.  There the group will be working with Axium Education - founded by OW, Craig Paxton - on their annual Winter School programme. The Westerfordians will be tutoring Grades 6 through to Matric, facilitating various activities, and learning more about the lives and culture of the community.  They will also get an opportunity to do brief work-shadowing at the Zithulele Hospital.  The hospital – which was ‘resuscitated’ by OWs about fifteen years ago, and which has had OWs at the helm ever since – has become the benchmark of rural health-care excellence in the Eastern Cape, if not nation-wide.

ZITHULELE NEEDS YOUR HELP

OW, Sarah Caine (2009) is one of the organisers of the Winter School (or Boot Camp, as it is known in the area).  She has made the appeals which follow below. Please will you see where you are able to help, whether through providing one or more of the items listed, or through a monetary donation to our efforts to assist Axium in their fantastic work of providing quality education in and around Zithulele.  There will be boxes in the School foyer, and a box for financial contributions outside the bursar’s office. Should you wish to do an EFT, please provide the reference, Zithu. If you are able to donate one of the much-needed calculators referred to below, please drop those off at the Front Office – not into a box – or contact Mr Anderson.

Sarah’s e-mail reads:

Is there anyone in your team who could collect and bring up scientific calculators? We are specifically in need of the Casio fx-82ES PLUS model of calculators. I know that they are pricey, but if the group knows of anyone who has finished university who no longer needs theirs, that would be a massive help here. They are as valuable as gold for our dedicated grade 10-12 learners. I am also planning to put out a general post on FB to my friends; would it be possible for them to drop them off at Westerford for your group to transport up here?

Then also, our English team is wanting magazines, preferably travel magazines/brochures for some tourism lessons we will have during the Boot Camp. We will be also be needing some craft supplies; colourful paper, glue sticks and scissors. Any help along these lines would be great!
