The recent October holiday was a very exciting and successful one for Westerford’s first waterpolo teams. The Girls’ First Team participated in the Reddam House Girls’ U19 Waterpolo Tournament during the beginning part of the holiday. They won 7 of their 8 games, beating Herschel 12-0 in the quarter-final and winning the semi-final against St Mary’s, Waverly, 12-5. These fantastic scores saw them into the final against the hosting team, Reddam. It was a close game, but unfortunately Reddam narrowly won by one goal, with the final score being 3-2.
Both the Boys’ and Girls’ First Teams then went up to Grahamstown to participate in the National Co-Ed Waterpolo Tournament, hosted by Kingswood College. The tournament was an extremely successful one for Westerford where for the first time ever both the girls and the boys made it to the semi-finals. The girls then went on to win the final against Pearson, with the final score being 7-6.
Congratulations to Ruby Versfeld for being awarded the award for Best Girl Forward and to Nicole Schumann for Best Girl Goalkeeper. Nicole Schumann, Ruby Versfeld, Caitlin Schreuder and Jess Brierley are also to be congratulated for being chosen for the Girls’ Tournament Team and Brandon Fair for the Boys’ Tournament Team.
