MANDARIN COMES TO PRETORIA

Congratulations to Jean-Luc Chappell and Amin Banderker who left for Pretoria this week with Mr Li after having been selected to represent Westerford’s Confucius Classroom in the preliminary contest for the 10th Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign Secondary Students.

Jean-Luc was a member of the pioneer Mandarin class in 2014. Although Mandarin is not offered in Grade 10, he enjoyed the subject so much that he wanted to continue to learn not just the language but also the culture. Jean-Luc says, “There is so much to learn, so much to know and that excites me.”

Amin began learning Mandarin at Westerford in 2015. He wanted to learn the language as he had always had an interest in Chinese language and culture, and he wanted to take advantage of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. He decided to continue with the subject in Grade 10 as he not only enjoyed it and found it interesting but it was a great way to challenge himself.

Mr Li has been hard at work preparing the pupils for the competition. Both Amin and Jean-Luc scored above 80% for their HSK Level 2 test during the May exam session. The HSK test is China's only standardised test of Standard Chinese language proficiency for non-native speakers.

With these excellent results and all the hard work put in, there is no doubt that Jean-Luc and Amin will make us all proud! We wish those safe travels and an excellent competition this weekend!
