LIGHTS, WHISTLE, ACTION!

Friday the 12th of May 2017 marked the historic day on which our brand new astro floodlights made their debut at the first night hockey matches at Imhoff. What would be a better time to do so than as the opening clash of the annual Westerford vs Edgemead derby. A head-to-head battle worthy of the history books took place under starry skies. Always a formidable opponent, Edgemead held nothing back, from the first whistle. Their enthusiasm was countered by a rowdy crowd of loud-mouthed supporters clad in Westerfordian maroon. This was welcomed by our players of both the 1st Girls and 1st Boys teams. With music provided by the Sound Team before the games and during half-time, both matches were played in good spirits.  The Girls 1sts drew 2-2 and a final Boys’ 1sts result of 3-0 to Edgemead closed off the night and set the mood for the continuation of the Edgemead derby the next morning.

The sun rose right on time on Saturday and the matches started bright and early. The 1st Team Boys’ Hockey defeat the night before did little to dull Westerfordian spirits as pupils from every class in every grade flocked in their hundreds to catch the action. The School’s spirit portfolio managed to transform the at-first drowsy mob into an astonishing engine of gees and it was this that drove the 1st Team Soccer Girls, 1st Team Netball and the 1st Rugby Team to sweet victories.

Well done to the sportsmen and women who battled it out on the pitch and were humble in victory and gracious in defeat. Here’s to the next Derby Day… and Night!
