AN INFORMATIVE LGBTQ+ DISCUSSION

Just prior to the exams, the Debating Society hosted a forum discussion at break in the Noel Taylor Hall that addressed the problems which are facing the LGBTQ+ community in Westerford, South Africa and the world at large. The event was held in order to try and raise awareness about LGBTQ+-related challenges and this was particularly topical as the new PLUS society had been launched the day before. The debate was well attended and yielded promising outlooks about the issues discussed.

PLUS is a new society that focuses on educating Westerford about the issues facing the LGBTQ+ community. One of the purposes of PLUS is to create a safe space for the pupils who do not conform to the heteronormative society found world-wide.

The event started off with each panel member - most of whom are members of the LGBTQ+ community - sharing his or her personal experiences about not fitting in, and ways in which   Westerford can become more aware of and sensitive to the kinds of prejudices to which these people are subjected. In short, this event was a success and - whilst there was initially a bit of confusion about whether this particular forum was a safe space - many helpful and constructive ideas were raised. The future of the Debating society is certainly very bright, with events like this one being held.
